From 1875 to 1877, the French traveler Charles Wiener explored much of this area, and in the course of his travels he discovered the Coyor Fortress on the high plain of Yamobamba, in the district of Namora, at 3100 meters above sea level. "It was," says Wiener, "a building that took on the form of a terraced hill, rising from its partially buried granite base beside a small lake. The Pyramid had eighteen terraced tiers, complete with streets, entryways and watchtowers.
"The upper platform was thirty meters long; to one side there was a round enclosure, and on the other side a very sturdy rectangular enclosure. In the middle there was a raised embankment or terrace, topped by yet another raised edifice, which the locals called 'The Sun
Temple'"
According to Wiener, Coyor "is one of the most extraordinary monuments that can be imagined, and is big enough to house hundreds of people".
After exploring these beautiful Pre-Incan ruins, you will have the chance to enjoy the charming countryside surrounding San Nicolás Lake, the largest natural lake in the department of Cajamarca. Many native species of Andean birds, fish and plants live in this area. Having reached the end of this route, one cannot help but marvel at the magnificence of the Capac Ñan, stretching out from beneath one's feet all the way to Cuzco.
